Norman Corwin's "Between Americans" 2021

Director: Richard Fish

Description:

In July, 1941, Norman Corwin confronted the extreme polarization of American opinion which had gripped the country over the prospects of becoming involved in World War II. The Grand Master of American audio theatre wrote a program intended to lower the temperature of the rhetoric and remind everyone of the common ground we all stand on — our common love of our country. The show caught the attention of Orson Welles, who repeated it — by chance — on the evening of December 7, and rallied the country together after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Before he died, Corwin worked on an updated version of this script. While not ignoring the flaws and mistakes in American history, it is a program to make people stop and think about what America means, how the strength and glory of the United States comes from so many different sources, and where we can all agree with each other. Like most of his programs this one is superbly timely, and NATF is proud and excited to present the first complete production of Norman Corwin’s final work.
