THE NATIONAL AUDIO THEATRE FESTIVALS SAVE THE DATE! DETAILS TO COME… From the 21st through the 23rd of October, the NATF hosted the 3rd Tony Hawkins Workshop in Burbank, CA, where participants received a weekend-long crash course in voice-over as it applies to the world of animation. Getting to this point was an adventure in itself, with the NATF losing its original studio space (dismantled due to the economy) and its hotel one week before the event (Lance scrambled over a 24 hour period to find new digs in proximity to our replacement studio, Blague Communications in North Hollywood). But get there we did: the weekend began with words from Helen Engelhardt about her late husband, his legacy, and his love of the spoken word before we commenced with our first class on creating characters with Lucien Dodge, a longtime participant of the Audio Theatre Workshop, and voice-over artist on video games, amusement park rides, and as a voice on Pokemon! This was followed by our Saturday session at Blague Communications, where we were given the opportunity to put into practice the previous night’s lessons in a professional recording studio, before the arrival of special guest Mark Evanier, one of the most successful and generous directors in animation, best known for his decade of work on Garfield. In addition to advice (and related stories) and technical lessons, we were given the opportunity to put our own spin on a script from the new Garfield Show! And how did we celebrate our session? With a real LA experience: dinner at Canter’s Deli (of course)! And Sunday’s session took us to the Eclectic Bar and Grille for brunch with legendary voice-over actor Corey Burton, who provided insights into his illustrious career, ranging from Disney rides to Star Wars villains. And considering Corey never makes personal appearances, believing the actor behind the voice should stay out of sight, having him for the afternoon was a real treat. Mark said something very telling during our session regarding the number of phony “acting coaches” in Los Angeles and elsewhere who will give you the career of Frank Welker for such and such an amount of money. Our intent for the weekend was to create a safe environment where those paying to be there get their money’s worth and then some hearing from some of the biggest names in the industry. Suffice to say, we did our job; it was a wonderful weekend for everyone.

This year’s Audio Theatre Workshop was one of the best in recent years, and with that in mind we would like to thank everybody who helped to make it possible, from our staff to special guests: Will Anderson (Playwright, The Son of West Branch) The National Audio Theatre Festivals, Inc., in association with SueMedia Productions, is pleased to announce that our 2010 production of William’s Leap for Freedom has won the Award for Excellence in the 2011 Communicator Awards! The Communicator Awards is the leading international awards program honoring creative excellence for Communications Professionals. Founded by communication professionals over a decade ago, the program receives over 9,000 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes, making it one of the largest awards of its kind. Official press release: The National Audio Theatre Festivals, Inc., America’s only arts organization devoted to the advancement of audio theatre and evolving media arts through education and presentation, is honored to announce the second recipient of the Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio Theatre: Producer, Director, and Dramatist Tom Lopez, founder of the ZBS Foundation. The Norman Corwin Award is the only award of its kind, named for the legendary radio writer, director, and producer, who created some of the greatest works for audio of the twentieth century, and who turned 100 in 2010. “The Corwin” regularly honors a leading figure in audio theatre who has made major contributions to the art form for ten or more years. Lopez’ career in audio drama began in the late 1960’s, as he and other collaborators from the world of commercial radio created a “radio commune” in upstate New York, using the medium as a way to raise consciousness. Many of the leading counter-culture figures came to ZBS Studios for no-holds-barred interviews with Tom, including authors Joseph Campbell, and Ken Kesey; Eric Idle (of Monty Python’s Flying Circus); and musicians Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia. The ZBS Foundation, a not-for-profit since 1973, became a audio theatre production company with the release of Lopez’ first radio drama, The Fourth Tower of Inverness, which subsequently aired on over 350 radio stations in the United States. The main character of Inverness, Jack Flanders, has been featured in over 100 hours of ZBS stories, including Moon Over Morocco, Dreams of Rio, The Steam Dreamers of Inverness, Midnight at the Casa Luna, and Orchids and Moonbeams. Equally popular has been his Ruby series, which features “galactic gumshoe” Ruby Tuesday, whose adventures can be best defined as Star Trek mixed with detective noir, Franz Kafka, and the Marx Brothers. In addition, Lopez has produced and directed programs for families, most notably his adaptations of James Gurley’s Dinotopia books, recorded in binaural 3-D sound, and pioneered the short-short audio form, with radio plays clocking in at five minutes or less. Likewise Lopez has pioneered the art of location recording; he has recorded the ambient sounds from other countries from Brazil to India, which appear predominantly in his pieces. To quote Tom Lopez about ZBS: “Our stories are not the usual mindless entertainment. Our stories are more like mindful entertainment. These are comic and cosmic adventures, science fiction, mystical mysteries – some with spiritual wisdoms woven within. Our intention has always been to raise consciousness by using the media, radio and audio.” Tom Lopez will receive the Award via a special Skype presentation on the opening night of the NATF’s annual Audio Theatre Workshop in West Plains, MO, Sunday, June 19, 2011. The NATF congratulates our old friend on this momentous accomplishment.
