A tribute to Norman Corwin…and we need your help to make it happen!

On May 3, 2010, the first poet laureate of radio and National Audio Theatre Festivals, Inc. Advisory Board Member, Norman Corwin, the author, director, and producer of some of radio’s greatest dramas including We Hold These Truths and On a Note of Triumph, will turn 100 years old (www.normancorwin.com). In his honor the NATF is initiating a new award, presented each year to an audio dramatist who has contributed 20 years or more to this art form. The first recipient of the Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio will be its namesake.

The National Audio Theatre Festivals, Inc. is creating a special event in Los Angeles on April 30 to kick off the inaugural award, and we need your help to make it happen. The NATF needs your help to raise a matching grant of $10,000 by February 27, 2010. To the left of this screen is our Paypal button. Press it. Make a donation today for the Norman Corwin Award ceremony. Any amount that you can donate will go a long way.

If you don’t have a Paypal account, you can contribute with a check made out to NATF and mailed to:

A message to our members!

Actually two messages -

First, if you have submitted a script to the National Audio Theatre Festival and you have not yet heard from us, worry not; its not you and its not us. Rather its our webhost. Rest assured we working on fixing the problem and getting your totally awesome radio works.

Second, if you have been on the “Members” page, you have probably noticed that the members list is…a tad outdated. Ultimately lack of upkeep is due to a variety of factors, but this is something we are also fixing, and will have an updated list soon. Which brings us to a very important question for you…

Are you paid up for the year?

Have you sent the NATF your membership check?

If not, YOU NEED TO DO THIS NOW. It’s thanks to you that the NATF is still around! If you haven’t already sent in your dues, do so! And as always, keep watching the skies – er, NATF webpage!!! And thanks for your continued support.

New play submission guidelines

Since the inception of the National Audio Theatre Festivals, the commitment to the production of new works for audio has been a vital part of our mission. The NATF is currently looking for world premiere audio dramas for future inclusion in our Audio Theatre Workshop live productions. Moreover, we are looking for stories written specifically for the medium of audio that exemplify the human experience, that hold a mirror to life, that will make you think. The type of material we are seeking:

World-premiere full length audio plays or musicals, 25 – 30 minutes in length
World-premiere ten minute audio plays or musicals (tell a story from beginning to end in ten minutes!)
World-premiere five minute audio plays (same as above…in five minutes or less! It can be done!)

We do not accept: stage plays, short stories, adaptations, or spoofs/satires of old time radio programs (or anything with allusions to old time radio).

To submit a full-length audio play for consideration at the National Audio Theatre Festival ATW, please send the following materials:

· An introductory cover letter and theatrical resume
· A one-page synopsis of the play you wish to submit
· Five pages of dialogue from the play

After considering your submission, we will let you know via e-mail if we would like the full script. We will respond to every submission, and we apologize if said response takes longer than expected.

To submit a five or ten minute audio play for consideration at the National Audio Theatre Festival ATW, please send the following materials:

· An introductory cover letter and theatrical resume
· The full play

These materials should be sent by e-mail to: newplays {at} natf(.)org (spelled out to keep out those nasty spambots).

Please note: the format for audio drama is different from that of stage plays and screenplays. Please visit the Resources page to learn how to do it!

The 2009 Audio Theatre Workshop…a quick wrap-up…and a look ahead!

“When I first arrived in West Plains in 2005 for my first Audio Theatre Workshop, I met Richard Fish, one of the first attendees of the ATW back when the National Audio Theatre Workshop was called the Midwest Radio Theatre Workshop. And one of the first things he said to me was: ‘welcome to our family.’ Because this organization is just that: a family. A wonderful group of mad scientists continually working, playing, learning, and ultimately pushing this art form called audio theatre forward.”

- Lance Roger Axt, ATW attendee

At this year’s ATW, we greeted old family members, and welcomed several new ones, including Kathy Garver (best known as “Cissy Davis” of TV’s Family Affair, and animation/audio book voice-over artist). And we presented three world-premiere works: “Darwin” from Dwight Frizzell, “Over There” from Eric Somers and Meredith Ludwig, and an adaptation of Poe’s “The Black Cat.” Not to mention a continuity piece in between the plays about what makes audio theatre…well, audio theatre.

Next year’s ATW plans to be even better; moreover, this year we had a long overdue series of round tables re: the future of the NATF: expansion of its mission beyond the Workshop. Not to mention plans for next year’s Workshop and the biggie in 2011, the NATF’s 30th Anniversary.
